The I-4 Mobility Partners team has been selected for the construction of four express toll lanes through downtown Orlando, as well as 35 years of operation of the express lanes. Additionally, 15 major I-4 interchanges will be reconstructed, and 75 bridges will be replaced. The Florida Department of Transportation will administer tolls.
The construction team is led by Swedish construction company Skanska Infrastructure Development, Inc., and includes John Laing Investments, Limited, Granite Construction, Lane Construction Company, HDR Engineering, Inc., Jacobs Engineering Group and Infrastructure Corporation of America.
Phase 1 of the $2.3 billion project is expected to start by the end of 2014 and is projected to take six years to complete. However, potential expansion of these toll roads into Polk County and Volusia County could put the construction term well over ten years.
There is speculation that the inevitable congestion caused by the road work could send drivers to the new SunRail commuter train, which starts on May 1st and includes 12 stops along a 31.5 mile route from Volusia County to south Orange County.
